Salon Scoops Prestigious Award

Freedom Hair was privileged to receive the award of Consumer Retailer of the Year at the Dundee Retail Awards 2008 in recognition of their outstanding charitable work. Now in its third year, the prestigious city centre annual award scheme recognises companies that have shown vision, innovation and dedication to excellence.

The ceremony was held at the Apex Hotel in June, when staff, family and friends of Freedom Hair joined other guests and nominees to be informed the salon h ad scooped the Community Award sponsored be the Evening Telegraph. This year had again seen a high number of entries for the various award categories and the panel of independent and expert judges had the roughest task yet in whittling down short-listed finalists. The judging panel, along with consumers, played a key role in selecting winners who have a vital and worthwhile role in Dundee.

Freedom Hair won over the judges after raising in excess of £30,000 for various charities through organising eight different events in the past year. The salon makes it their business to improve the lives of people in the city - through giving time, effort and financial help to those in need. Organisations to benefit from the Dock Street salon’s efforts have included Maggie’s Centre, Ninewells Hospital’s Ward 34, Hostel Feelings, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Breast Cancer Care and Dundee University Charity Committee.

In making sure each event is a hit, Freedom relies on its ‘Network of Friends’ - a group formed by the owner, Irving Miskell-Reid. The business sees these charity events as an opportunity to give something back to the city in which it has operated successfully for the past 20 years.

Irving Miskell-Reid said, "I was delighted to accept the award on behalf of the whole salon - without the commitment and enthusiasm from my staff and Network of Friends, the events would not have been such a success! The continual charity events we organise have allowed us to play our part in the community where we work. We look forward to supporting many more worthy causes through the many events we have planned for in the future."
